Start here, if you are writing a college paper which requires some knowledge of Victorian conventions. I read this book because I am a student of Victorian literature, and I had the good luck to have Dr. Reed as a professor early on in my career. I ordered it out of plain curiosity and found it both enjoyable and useful. If you plan to read extensively from the time period, a book like this can help you sort your thoughts into more manageable sessions, and save a good deal of time deciding what topic to choose for a term paper. For example, choose "Coincidences" and you will be treated to examples of contemporary improbabilities, with several subtopics such as coincidence and plot, providence, and destiny. "Duelling" will give you both social reality and literary conventions. Thirteen separate conventions were treated here; it's not intended to be exhaustive, each is a careful study of a major theme. The best thing about the book for me was the sense of humor behind the sturdy, heavy intellectual content. It's fun to read a summary of male types such as Jacob, the Samaritan, and the Poor Scholar and see if you can fit your friends in with them. "Disguise" might be the best of the book, a fat chapter ranging from the obvious costume and masks onwards to good and evil in disguise, hypocrisy, fables of the hidden self...and many more. This is the kind of book that professors love to see in your references; it is well written and well respected in the field. I've certainly used it on more than one occasion, so it's nice to have on the shelf. You may find yourself with more than one of his books in time.
