I have long enjoyed Jill Krementz' books, and this one in particular. I bought this copy for the lobby of my ballet school; its modern-day counterpart, the DK Superguides ballet book by Darcy Bussell, is also lovely, and required reading for my beginner students. But I have not seen this kind of behind-the-scenes look at the life of an aspiring ballet student since this one was published. And any of us who have danced prized (or even lesser) roles in the Nutcracker can appreciate the magic of being chosen for the part, the weeks of rehearsal leading to opening night, the anticipation and butterflies as the house lights lower and the orchestra begins the overrture, and the immense satisfaction in what we have done when it's all over. These sentiments are captured so beautifully in this text and in the photographs, including the rare, sweet images of Balanchine himself with the children's cast. I long for a reprint of this book.

Very Young Dancer
My daughter is a bit young for the book, 3.5 years old, but she really loves it. I had this book when I was younger , in the 70's, and I love reading it to her. I also got Jill Krementz other book in the series, about the gymnast.
