Die Berechtigung, mich iiber Verkehrsgeographie zu auBern, leite ich daraus ab, daB dieser Wissenszweig ein Grenzgebiet zwischen der Geographie und dem Verkehrswesen ist, daB er aber fast nur von Geographen, dagegen kaum von Verkehrstechnikern bearbeitet worden ist. Dies ist deswegen auffallig und bedauerlich, weil der Verkehrstechniker bei der Netzgestaltung und Trassierung (Linienfiihrung) erheblicher geographischer Kenntnisse bedarf und auBerdem die Fahigkeit besitzen muB, sich in die natiirlichen, wirtschaftlichen und politischen Verhaltnisse des Gelandes einzufiihlen. In vielen Bearbeitungen der Verkehrsgeographie fallt dem Verkehrsfachmann eine eigenartige Stellung der Verfasser zur Verkehrstechnik auf: Einerseits werden namlich die Verhaltnisse, die sich aus einer primitiven Verkehrstechnik ergeben, iibertrieben betont, und die Beispiele aus Landern und Volkern mit tief stehender Technik entnommen. Es ist nun zwar zuzugeben, daB sich die Abhangigkeit des Verkehrs von den geographischen Gegebenheite- den giinstigen und den widrigen - besonders anschaulich darstellen laBt, wenn man yom Kanu, dem FuBpfad, dem Reittier, der Karawane usw. ausgeht; aber heute spielen nun einmal die technisch hochstehenden Verkehrsmittel in allen wichtigen Erdraumen die entscheidende Rolle, und das muB auch in der Ver- kehrsgeographie beachtet werden.
