Author Erik Marcus has written a hard-hitting book, one not for the faint-hearted. Marcus outlines his own journey to veganism, and then goes about backing it up with good research on the health, environmental, and animal rights benefits of a diet free of animal products. You get to see the impact this diet has had on Dr. Dean Ornish's heart patients, and spend some time with the People of Farm Sanctuary, who are devoted to animal resue and activism. The section on the cruelty animals in the food industry are subjected to is particulary harrowing. Marcus wraps up with a section of the ecological impact of the meat industry, a topic with which the general reader is probably least familiar. So impassioned is the writing, and persuasive the arguments, that even though one might not come away from the book wanting to be a vegan, you definitely will be forced to think about your part in the picture. Recommended for those curious about veganism, vegetarians who are considering transitioning to veganism, and people who are already vegan and might like a reminder of why they do what they do.
