This release completes a Ralph Vaughan Williams orchestral cycle from the Hallé and conductor Sir Mark Elder dating back some years. The performances on this double album, in fact, were recorded in three separate locations, with the recording of The Lark Ascending going back to 2005. However, there is no feeling that these are odds and ends; the cycle has had a consistent point of view that remains clear here. Consider the reading of The Lark Ascending, with Hallé leader Lyn Fletcher as the elegant soloist. There is no shortage of recordings of this work, but this one stands out for its deliberate, spacious quality. So it is, too, with the Symphony No. 7 ("Sinfonia Antartica"), whose film music origins recede into the background, and the Symphony No. 9, which, like Tchaikovsky's last symphony, ends with a sober movement.
