In US and Them Berreby uses a wide array of theories to examine how we create our human kind categorize. He presents and argues the shortcoming of the entitivaity theory which is that human kinds are actual entities. He also presents and argues against social construcivism. That is that human kinds do not exist at all and are merely socially constructed. He thinks of human kinds as relationshal. They reflect relationships among people. It is an interesting book with lots of examples to illucidat these theories that will be familiar to a north american audience. The book is not written in a linear fashion and the reader might feel frustrated since they cannot easily discern the main points. The organization of the book is its main downfall. The numerous examples at times overwhelming make this work an entertaining read.
