This collection brings together several unusual versions of key Webb songs, ranging from Rex Harrison's Broadway-styled recitation of "I Thought I Had Time" to the Freshmen's sharply realized folk-rock version of "Carpet Man." There are also three versions of "MacArthur Park" represented here, one by Long John Baldry that brings out all of the bloat in the song's overreaching lyrics and two instrumental versions that spotlight the song's absolutely gorgeously realized melody, a dynamically orchestrated take by the Band of the Yorkshire Imperial Metals, and a woozy jazz version by Atlantic Bridge. In his songs Webb captured the hopes, fears, and inherent personal isolation of the '60s, generating compositions that reached both outward ("Up, Up, and Away") and inward ("Wichita Lineman," "By the Time I Get to Phoenix") with beautiful melodies that are as versatile as they are haunting.
