Once featured in an eight-page spread in Life magazine that detailed her journey to becoming a successful cabaret performer, Lynda Jamison brings a clear, always-in-key voice to her third album. This time around, Jamison obtained the services of Rosemary Clooney's musical director, John Oddo, who garnered some of New York's finest studio and rehearsal band musicians and put them with an army of strings to provide musical support for the session. (Oddo must have felt very comfortable, because one hears Clooney in Jamison quite clearly.) Add to this a set of sparkling arrangements, and one has 52 minutes of mesmerizing musical entertainment with a jazzy feel, even on those tracks where the strings are present. Jamison shows her high comfort level with Oddo's arrangements throughout, such as on a swinging, swaying "Get out of Town," where she lets loose with a sassy "sayonara toots!" as the coda. The presence of top musicians begs for opportunities for them to get in some solo licks. This happens often, including on "What Is This Thing Called Love," where Jamison opens with just Steve La Spina's bass providing the sole backing before the band kicks in and they kick throughout the track. Solos come with Mark Vinci on tenor, Larry Farrell on trombone, Bud Burridge on trumpet, and Jay Berliner on guitar. Burridge does a Don Fagerquist-like muted trumpet on "I'm Glad There Is You." This album is a must for those who revel in familiar songs with a good balance between ballads and jazzy material, sung by an outstanding, discerning vocalist, arranged by one of the tops in the business, and played by an excellent corps of musicians. ~ Dave Nathan, Rovi
