Not illustrated. 1887 Excerpt: ...and suffering and sin--then men's hearts will surely be drawn together to recognise the claims and the duties of a common brotherhood, and to maintain, as dearer than life itself, that liberty wherewith, as they will then feel, "Christ hath made them free." Meanwhile, till the advent of that golden age, we may humbly and trustfully work with God in that direction to which all His purposes, all His providences, so far as we can read their lessons, seem to point. That His Church "should be one," was the Saviour's prayer. And so let us work, if not for that union which is external, at least for unity which may yet underlie manifold and obvious external differences. We may each, within the sphere of our respective influences, add something to the ground that is being won from suspicion, from uncharitableness, from prejudice, from jealousy, from rivalryNo doubt "there are many adversaries," but they that have a good cause, and engage in it with a loyal heart, may hope to "drive out the Canaanites, though they be strong and though they have chariots of iron." A poet's words may breathe new force into hands too inclined to droop, new hopes into hearts too ready to despond. "Say not the struggle nought availeth; The labour and the wounds are vain; The enemy faints not, nor faileth; And as things have been, they remain.
