While talkingof ceremonies, I may just briefly add, that the first appearance of verdure in the spring receives the priestly benediction, and a similar ceremony is performed in blessing the waters of the Neva. But I shall not be particular in describing ceremonies which are nearly the same, and only differ according to the event which they celebrate. The population of St. Petersburg is computed at between four and five hundred thousand. The greatest number ol foieigners are Germans, to whom this nation is much indebted for its advances in polite literature. Of late years many French have spilled in the empire.
