This is a comprehensive review of the differential diagnosis of heart and great vessel diseases using echocardiography and uses the highest production standards currently available. It embraces conventional and colour doppler flow imaging, computer-driven cardiac ultrasound and interventional echo. It includes peri-operative multiplane transoesophageal techniques and ultrasound in emergency medicine and intensive care. Newer techniques covered include 3-D echocardiography, acoustic microscopy, intravascular and intracardiac sonography and right and left heart contrast echo. The first section describes the techniques and their practical applications, whilst the second deals with clinical problems, and constitutes the main part of the book. It includes congenital paediatric and adult problems. Smaller chapters cover topics such as monitoring of valve prosthetic function, infectious endocarditis and original work on AIDS-associated problems. The final section is on the peri-operative use of ultrasound including applications of the transoesophageal techniques described in Part I. The outstanding feature of the book is the interrelationship between the 800 original colour ultrasound images, the correlated line illustrations and the text, which has been carefully written for quick and precise reference. In addition, decision-making flowcharts have been included at the end of each chapter. Rather than showing a single, 'ideal' image for each clinical condition, the authors have provided multiple images from different scan planes showing different stages of disease and severity. Ultrasound in Cardiology will appeal to cardiologists, internists and radiologists and also to cardiac surgeonsseeking an explanation of the role of this important technique in intraoperative assessment.
