Bringing the wild Kool Keith in concert experience to your living room, Ultra-Octa-Doom is a desirable CD/DVD set from 2B1, a label that's released plenty of packages like this before, most of them from reggae artists and almost all captured at San Francisco's Maritime Hall. This set is one of their most ambitious to date. Not only is there a 2006 Maritime show with the wicked and wacky turntabilist Kutmasta Kurt as DJ, but someone dug up a 1999 show -- back when Black Elvis mania was in full effect -- from San Francisco's Mezzanine club. The Black Elvis footage is a little rough but way above watchable, while the 2006 set is well captured with cameras just where you'd want them. Keith's performance on the latter is energetic, exciting, and extremely fun to watch. He's a sure master of ceremonies bouncing off Kutmasta Kurt's whimsical turntable creations and pushing the audience into hysteria when hits like "Blue Flowers," "Sex Style," and "Ego Trippin'" get their turns. There's also some audience participation, which leads to nudity -- befuddled nudity, if that's possible -- and a three-girl dance crew that only Keith could have imagined. The CD includes the audio from the 2006 show along with a fantastic new mix of "Heads Up" but you'll have a hard time finding it since the track list is all wrong. Besides that, this is a well-put together effort that gives hardcore fans plenty of bang for their buck. [The CD was also released with different packaging.] ~ David Jeffries, Rovi
