Meet the Eiaouans ... and their distant relatives, the Sivaoans. Janet Kagan explores a lot of taboos in this book, and the risks to Captain Kirk (concussion as the result of asking the wrong question), Mr. Spock (a case of aspirant pneumonia), and every other member of the crew (not to mention the prospect of a deadly epidemic wreaking destruction throughout the Federation) EXCEPT Lt. Nyota Uhura are ... well, actually, about right for a classic Trek adventure. Lt. Uhura risks a fair amount more, although not physically -- as she is the go-between trying to repair a milennia-long estrangement between two planets, not to mention keep humanity alive in the face of that epidemic.

It is a totally believable story with a great plot. I lost my original copy and couldn't wait for another one.
