Burning Bush sticks its previously released compilations of I-Roy and U-Roy together for Two Bad D.J.. I-Roy's disc was released as Deejay a-Menace Babylon, which was an already mixed-up version of Crisis Time with some tracks missing and others thrown on. The performances are generally excellent, but as usual, the liner notes are no help. Bunny Lee sits in the producer's chair, which means the tracks are spacious and bouncy, characteristics that compliment I-Roy's gruff yelps and buried references. The bad news is that some of tapes have suffered over the years, and dropouts and stereo shifts are numerous and jarring. U-Roy's disc was originally released as Babylon Burning: The Mighty Songs of U-Roy, a decent collection of tracks done for Duke Reid and King Tubby for the most part. Once again the performances are great and liner notes are absent, a greater crime here since there's no explanation of why production evolves from cheap and muddy on "Hot Pot" to sleek and synthetic on "King Tubby's Skank." None of the original tracks that the DJs are toasting over get mentioned in the booklet, nor do the numerous crooners that duet with U-Roy. Still, there's a ton of great music here, and even if it warrants better packaging, Burning Bush's coupling of these like-minded DJs makes for one of the label's better sets. ~ David Jeffries, Rovi
