Lets start out by saying that I feel a certain kinship with the author and I did know off the bat that he is from Southern California as well somehow. What I have to say I hope that he doesn't take the wrong way, but maybe can do a little thinking about it and in another release of the book include more. I thought that the book lacked a tremendous amount of depth. All of the emotions were very surface. I have driven all the way down to Panama and would say that C.A. is my favorite place to travel (48 countries and counting) to, however he lacked any details of the beautiful place he visited. It was a very similar read to Cahill's book where he is setting a record from Tierra to Alaska (understandably he wouldn't stop in Antigua to hike Mt. Pacaya if he is racing). The section on Guatemala is a page or two and doesn't talk about it at all. He didn't discuss any of the ride down Mexico. Overall: the entire book he doesn't discuss any fun that he has had at all! He mentions a couple of good drives, but that is nothing compared to the maginificent beauty of a rugged landscape or a gorgeous seascape. He tended to make everything seem like a terrible nitemare, I know that sometimes travel is rough and there are a lot of unsavory characters but he didn't describe ANY of the positive interactions with the locals he met. He briefly mentions a woman in BsAs but that is it. I would have liked to have heard more about it. I think that the lack of human compassion and the overly bad assing/Ramboafying took too much of the story.
No travel details, positive human interactions were too few and far between and the format in which it was written took its toll on me.
I agree what you went through was rough, and having been in near deaths abroad I can appreciate your resolve to live but I wish you would have included more about the destinations. Seeing your Locked up Abroad was informative as well.

Best book I ever read
This book is incredibly well written. I could see, smell and feel whatever was being described. At the end, I had tears in my eyes. This is a wonderful book, probably the best book I have ever read.
