The Notations, the Radiants, Elvin Spencer, Jimmy Jones, Renaldo Domino, and a host of other unknowns offer brassy, upbeat soul in the Chicago style, usually dancefloor-ready. There are a few surprises that keep one's attention -- the country harmonica on Johnny Williams' "Maggie," the enchanted-island phrasing of Renaldo Domino on "Nevermore," the Hawaiian guitar on George McGregor's "Temptation Is Hard to Fight" -- though on the whole the material is pleasantly average. ~ Richie Unterberger, Rovi
