While the Disky Records Al Martino compilation Twenty Great Love Songs does contain some of the singer's greatest hits -- including his debut single "Here in My Heart," his 1970 cover of Elvis' "Can't Help Falling in Love," "Spanish Eyes," which was arguably his biggest hit, and "Speak Softly Love," (from The Godfather, of course) -- the majority of the tracks collected here are lesser known cuts. They do deal with love, of course, but the percentage of Martino's work that doesn't discuss amore is quite small to begin with, making it much harder to compile a non-love album than a love one. This doesn't mean that Twenty Great Love Songs is bad per se because there are still some great songs on it (the aforementioned singles, "If I Were a Carpenter," "My Cherie") but it's not a particularly interesting compilation overall, neither showing Martino's greatest successes nor another angle, unique or otherwise. Budget material, for sure, and not much more than that. ~ Marisa Brown, Rovi
