Tunnel to Glory is a historical novel portraying the individuals involved with the planning and digging of a tunnel in an effort to capture the vital city of Petersburg, Virginia in the summer of 1864 during the American Civil War; the Union plan was to dig underneath Confederate lines, blow them up, break through, and eventually capture Petersburg. This event is known as the Battle of the Crater. When I started reading the book I thought it would be somewhat similar to the novel The Killer Angels (a novel about the Battle of Gettysburg) in which the events unfold during the battle. However, most of the book portrays what the characters did before the Civil War. Thus, I was a little disappointed as I read through the book. Still, the ending was well-done and I found the character development to be fairly strong. Based on what I have read, author F. L. Kafka has created a historically accurate novel about the 48th Pennsylvania Infantry and its role at the Battle of the Crater.
