In the first place, a massive abut ment was built at the water's edge, from which long timbers were projected, heavily loaded at the rear ends with stone; the ends over the water being additionally supported by legs resting on the river's bed. Upon these timbers a platform was built, from which an abutment of stone was sunk in the water; this abut ment serving as a new basis for building another, and so on until the whole was completed.
