A clever story of intrigue, set in 17th-century Amsterdam, inspired by the paintings and interiors of the Dutch artists. The surroundings in the canal-threaded city with its gabled buildings and narrow alley-ways are vividly evoked, and so is the culture, saturated with the Bible and works of moral precepts. Tulip-fever is at its height, and tulips are bought and sold on the stock-market like shares. The author uses detail well to create atmosphere in the various households , of the merchant, the artist and so on. While I wouldn't rate the quality of the writing and the dialogue quite as highly as that of "Girl with a Pearl Earring" this novel is in the same genre and deserves comparison with the other modern classic. If you like historical stuff, read it.
