Seller's Description:
Very Good. Green cloth, 262 pps.; illustrations. LAID IN IS A SHORT NOTE IN INK "RENT FOR JUNE 1899/ RECEIVED/ (signed) LOTTA CRABTREE". Entertaining biography of Lotta Crabtree, the performer and personality who became known as "The Fairy Star of The Gold Rush" and "The California Diamond". Crabtree arrived in the California gold fields at age 5 and began dancing in the mining camps at age 8. She and her family moved to San Francisco when she was 9 and Lotta continued to attract much attention on the stage for a number of years. Several years later she came east and was a sensation in the Broadway music halls. As can be imagined, the beautiful performer was ardently persued but never married; her mother, and later she herself, invested in California real estate. She retired to New Jersey, a wealthy woman, at age 45. A very good copy; copyright page bears the imprint "Published August, 1928" but a less than scrupulous previous owner has apparently (and rather transparently) erased the "second printing" line beneath it. No dust jacket.
The book was delivered promptly, in fine condition, and at a fair price. The author offers varied insights into the mid-1800s show-biz world and into the life of Lotta Crabtree. Some of the writing feels like a first-hand account while it is not that. Clearly well-researched and most references are documented. An excellent source for further research.
