When required for use the masses must be made into an emulsion with glycerine and water, or with sterile water alone. The objections to arm to arm vaccination are as valid in the Tropics as in England, but not more so. There is no evidence in support of the statement that leprosy may be conveyed in this way. In the presence of an epidemic of variola, and in the absence of a sufficient supply of calf-lymph, arm to arm vaccination may be necessary, and the vaccinifers can be sent for considerable distances, so that a wide extent of country can be rapidly rendered immune. Where the supply of vaccinifers is limited a large number of vaccinations can be performed from a single vesicle by placing two or three drops of glycerine on the vesicle and then puncturing the vesicle in many places, and using this fresh mixture with glycerine for the vaccinations; by rubbing fresh glycerine on the vesicle and scraping the surface, the mixed fluid can be used for further vaccinations, so that 100 or more persons may be vaccinated from a single fair vaccinifer. In the selection of vaccinifers every precaution should be taken to select only healthy persons, and by using few vaccinifers those can be more carefully selected, and they and their parents more thoroughly examined.
