This book is based on 2 translations, one written in the 13th-century by Strassburg, the other by a man known only as Thomas, time unspecified. The theme of this book is, of course, the doomed love story of Tristan and Isolde. Tristan and Isolde are seemingly more blessed than anyone should be - both charming, beautiful, the best knight and queen ever born. The problem is, that Isolde is married to the King of Cornwall, and Tristan is his trusted friend and a member of the King's court entourage. There are some fanciful elements - a dragon, a magical dog, a love-potion - but this book is surprisingly forthright when it comes to things like betrayal, honor, deceit, and thwarted passion. So much of the book is devoted to the false environment these two lovers create, and the disastrous results for everyone around them. A rather heartbreaking book, in many ways, as well as an intimate view of the medieval world Tristan and Isolde lived in.
