This revised English translation edited by Francis G. Gentry. Based on a Celtic legend and possibly other sources, the tale is a tragedy about the illicit love between the Cornish knight Tristan and the Irish princess Iseult. It depicts Tristan's mission to escort Iseult from Ireland to marry his uncle, King Mark of Cornwall. On the journey, Tristan and Iseult ingest a love potion, instigating a forbidden love affair between them.
Add this copy of The Tristan and Isolde of Gottfried Von Strassburg. to cart. $50.00, very good condition, Sold by McBlain Books rated 4.0 out of 5 stars, ships from Hamden, CT, UNITED STATES, published 1948 by Princeton University Press.
This book is based on 2 translations, one written in the 13th-century by Strassburg, the other by a man known only as Thomas, time unspecified. The theme of this book is, of course, the doomed love story of Tristan and Isolde. Tristan and Isolde are seemingly more blessed than anyone should be - both charming, beautiful, the best knight and queen ever born. The problem is, that Isolde is married to the King of Cornwall, and Tristan is his trusted friend and a member of the King's court entourage. There are some fanciful elements - a dragon, a magical dog, a love-potion - but this book is surprisingly forthright when it comes to things like betrayal, honor, deceit, and thwarted passion. So much of the book is devoted to the false environment these two lovers create, and the disastrous results for everyone around them. A rather heartbreaking book, in many ways, as well as an intimate view of the medieval world Tristan and Isolde lived in.
