While violinist Alexander Kerr and pianist Lisa Leonard present the Sonata No. 3 (2002) with a mixture of melancholy, dreaminess, and ferocity, Hidetaro Suzuki and accompanist Zeyda Ruga Suzuki play the Sonata No. 2 (1994) with an understated tone and cool detachment; and Joshua Bell and Deanna Aikman render the Sonata No. 1 with intensity and grit in their live, highly resonant performance. To further confuse the listener, violinist Davis Brooks performs with Aikman's electronics in the Fantasy (1989, revised 1991), a more experimental, multilayered, and dense work than the accessible and rather traditional sonatas.
