Shields worked for the City of Tampa and volunteered as the first volunteer Chaplain for the Fire Department. In 1970, Shields and Susan and their five children moved to St. Petersburg. Shields worked for the Commission on Community Relations and later the Airport Limo Company. Susan worked a few years in home-health nursing and twenty -one years in the Division of Nursing at St. Petersburg Junior College. She is the author of Nursing Math Simplified. When she retired in January 1998, she joined her Husband Shields at Tampa International Airport as a volunteer Chaplain. Shields had begun this work in the mid- nineties. He and Susan served there together until he became ill. Following his death in April 2012, Susan returned one day a week to the Airport Chaplaincy her husband had loved so much.
