Travels in a Thin Country, an earlier effort by Wheeler, shows a bit less nuance than books like Terra Incognita and Magnetic North, but is worth the read because of the unusual subject (Chile). Wheeler always writes well, but in this book there is less integration than the later ones, too much focus on herself (not a bad thing in a travel book when done in appropriate measure--see Graham Greene's work, for example) and a storytelling flatness somewhat like the terrain she describes in many parts of the book. But overall I recommend the book for view of Chile from someone passing through and recognizing how much of outsider they truly are (were).
