This publication describes recent advances in the regulation of gene expression at the translational and post-translational levels. It is especially timely in that researchers now recognize that the synthesis of various interesting gene products is regulated importantly, if not exclusively, at the translational level. These gene products include growth factors, protooncogenes, cytokines, cell cycling regulators, viral proteins, heat shock proteins, iron transport and storage proteins, and ribosomal proteins. A number of papers present interesting hypotheses as to why translational, rather than the more common transcriptional, mechanisms have evolved for these purposes. Several introductory chapters discuss the general mechanisms for the "global" regulation of translation. Also discussed are mechanisms that regulate the expression of larger groups of proteins whose synthesis is turned on or off during important physiological transitions.
