As the opening invocation of the Litany is addressed to that awful Being, in whose name we were baptized, "God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Ghost--three Persons in one God"--so the solemn form of deprecation which follows corresponds to the first part of our baptismal vow. The first part of our vow, as sinful creatures entering into the service of the Holy God, is to renounce all evil, "The Devil and all his works, the pomps and vanities of this wicked world, and all the sinful lusts of the flesh." And if we want at the same time a directory to guide us in the fulfilment of our vow, and a form in which to give expression to our earnest prayers for grace to enable us to do so--we cannot do better than take these earnest supplications of our Litany. May the Spirit of truth be with us while we are proceeding with the consideration of them, to show us at the same time the tremendous evil of sin, and the riches of that grace which delivers us from it! "We must first observe that a change takes place in the object of address, and that from imploring mercy from the Eternal God, as He exists from everlasting to everlasting, we turn to that gracious and glorious Being who, "when the fulness of time was come," appeared in our world, as God and man united in one person, to "deliver us from evil." When Israel of old were oppressed by their enemies, in the days of the Judges, men of might and prowess were from time to time raised up to deliver them--so that "to deliver Israel" became a common expression to signify the government which they exercised.
