This is the start of Shirleen Davies' series on the MacLarens of Fire Mountain. Usually, the patriarch of a series in historical fiction is a man of great emotional strength, with lots of sterling qualities. Niall MacLaren is not a sterling character and it shows in how he treats women. He spends Friday nights with his dance hall girlfriend while wooing a widow on Sundays. The widow does not like children and wants to send Niall's daughter to boarding school (a 7-year-old child). He still loves his dead wife and says he will only marry again for financial gain.
After a stagecoach accident, a young woman with no memory comes to stay at the MacLaren ranch. Before long, he seduces young Kate, while telling her that they have no future. He even wants Kate there when he proposes to the widow. You gotta love this guy.
First, I don't like amnesia stories. However, the author makes it realistic by letting the character talk about vague memories that disappear in an instant, leaving Kate frustrated. I don't plan to read the others in this series. There just wasn't enough to encourage me to read another.
