Fine in very good jacket. Hardcover in black cloth stamped in gilt. First printing. x+ 158 pp. Illustrated with hand-drawn maps. Fine (ownership signature stamp of a former Princeton University historian front free endpaper) in very good, price clipped dust jacket. A volume made up of all the Civil War letters to his parents and the diary of future Chief Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. from May, 1861 to July, 1864. Holmes particpated in the Battle of Ball's Bluff, the Peninsual Campaign, Antietam, and 1st and 2nd Fredericksburg as well as his period as aide-de-camp to General Horation Wright. Th diary is principally concerned with the Wilderness Campaign, Spottsylvania, and the assault on Petersburg in May and June of 1864.
