This account of the American Revolution uses many primary sources to tell an authoritative story from the point of view of the Loyalists. It punctures the myth of a unanimous uprising, showing the majority in each Colony who remained loyal far into the war. It details the social pressure, propaganda, and physical violence that the Rebels used to 'persuade' Loyalists to support the Revolution. Each chapter includes many footnotes, authenticating each story and conclusion. Spoiler alert: The British surrender at Yorktown wasn't the end of the story -- abuse, confiscation, and shunning of Loyalists continued until after the War of 1812.

Tories in America
Because of time constraints, and ideology, much is left out of American History as taught in our elementary and secondary schools. Part of that void can be filled by reading this book. Though most often portrayed as a war between Americans and British it was actually a civil war. The major cities, New York and Philadelphia were actually Loyalist strongholds. Loyalists (Tories) supported the King's forces by spying, guiding and providing food and supplies. Many fought beside the King's forces and several took part in raids on 'rebels'. As the war continued these raids also became personal vendettas. During and after the war, tens of thousands of 'loyalists' emigrated to England, Canada, Bermuda and the Bahamas. This work presents an interesting facet of American history in an easily read fashion.

Hard to put down
A very revealing study of early politics and struggles that went into the founding of the United States. Never was the outcome a foregone conclusion, with so many intrigues going on, it's a wonder anyone kept their sanity. It would be hard to find anything in fiction so fascinating. Loved this book, could hardly put it down, I was riveted to the very end.
