This haphazardly assembled box set has quality music to spare, but lacks the thoughtful packaging and extras that listeners have come to expect from this format. Liner notes are limited to a decent but all-too-short article on the band's history. The rest of the skimpy booklet fails to offer any interviews or tributes to the Chi-Lites. Even worse, it doesn't even offer any production information or musician credits. Hardcore fans of the Chi-Lites will also be disappointed to discover that Too Good to Be Forgotten neglects to include any of the rarities that usually entice connoisseurs to purchase such a set: no live tracks, no alternate mixes, no unreleased recordings. In fact, everything on this box set can be found via compilations or the group's original albums. The one plus of Too Good to Be Forgotten is that it does offer plenty of classic soul in a single package: from hard-hitting message tunes like "(For God's Sake) Give More Power to the People" to creamy slow-jam classics like "Oh Girl," this box set shows off the expansive talents of the group's songwriter/producer Eugene Record and the Chi-Lites' chameleon-like skill at handling a variety of soul music subgenres. However, Too Good to Be Forgotten fails to satisfy because it offers too much for the casual listener and not enough to please a fanatic. As a result, anyone interested in the Chi-Lites is better off exploring their work via the original albums and their many single-disc compilations. ~ Donald A. Guarisco, Rovi
