Photographer Tokihiro Sato (born 1957), along with contemporaries Toshio Shibata and Naoya Hatakeyama, focuses on the shifting landscape of modern Japan. Using a 8 x 10 inch camera fitted with a darkening filter, Sato creates lengthy exposures in which he moves throughout landscapes, pausing periodically with a mirror that reflects sunlight back at the camera. The light is recorded, as are traces of his presence, but he himself is rendered invisible by his motion.

Seller's Description:
VG (light scuffs & scratches to wraps. bump to back upper corner w/ light crimp/crease to pg corners) BW pictorial wraps; 39 pp.; 14 bw plates. Accompanied the 2005 exhibition of work rendered by Japanese photographer Tokihiro Sato (b. 1957). "Sato creates long-exposure photographs in which he travels through the frame of the landscape, drawing with a flashlight (by night) or reflecting sunlight back at the camera with a mirror (by day). These lights are recorded as traces of the artist's presence, while he himself is rendered invisible by his motion during the course of the exposure. Installed as large-scale transparencies that are lit from behind, these glowing images embody presence and absence, and materiality and spirituality...The book reproduces fourteen transparencies in rich duotone, and features an essay by...Elizabeth Siegel. Also included is an interview with the artist, in which he elucidates his technique and discusses the relationship between photography and sculpture that he explores in his work." (back cover).
