This collection of 21 songs by Bill Deal & the Rhondels is a bit different from the reissues by Heritage and Sequel. For starters, although it has the key classic tracks by that band, it also features a pair of songs by the successor group the Sheiks of Shag, featuring Bill Deal and drummer Ammon Tharp who, between them, organized the original Rhondels. Additionally, the last eight songs are live recordings done at Virginia Beach, VA, in 1991. The fidelity on the classic material, although quite good, isn't quite up to the Heritage and Sequel CDs, but on music like this that's hardly a matter for condemnation -- this is dance music, pure and simple, ill-suited to analysis from a sitting position as one might critique a Beatles song or a jazz recording; indeed, if the version of "Hold Back the Night" here doesn't get you at least wanting to be on your feet and dancing then you should probably have someone call an undertaker. And the version of "Do I Love You" is one of the more amazing reinterpretations of a classic Phil Spector song and production that one is ever likely to hear. The newer material is a little more formulaic but has its appeal, and certainly doesn't detract from the value of the CD, which is considerable. The annotation is also very informative, and the best part of the latter is a list of chart placements for Bill Deal's recordings, a list of acts with whom the Rhondels shared billing, and a roster of the Rhondels' various members. ~ Bruce Eder, Rovi
