This is the story of Robert Fitzroy - captain of 'The Beagle' on Darwin's journey of discovery that changed our understanding of the world. Telling the tale through Fitzroy's eyes was an excellent decision - for he had by far the richer and more interesting life. Harry Thompson almost drowns us with the detail and reality of this harsher world - but the book is skillfully written and the prose is beautiful at times, bringing unimaginable worlds to life. If you can manage to read all 3 books as one novel you become absorbed into a world that you miss grievously as soon as you close the book. The crew's adventures with the people on the southernmost tip of America were frightening and touching - and the civilised world's reaction to the people that Fitzroy brought back to England was delicately drawn, creating complex feelings in the reader. Indeed, the emphasis of the book was on the cultural evolution of people, amongst the other animals. This would be my choice for the 1 book allowed on my desert island: I can't imagine ever tiring of reading it.
