Our Lady of Angels School Fire
I was in primary school when I saw the Our Lady of Angels fire on the 6PM news. I had forgotten about it until last October when I saw a newspaper article on one of the Sisters whose quick thinking saved many young lives. To Sleep With the Angels was listed as the only book written from investigation of the tragic events of that day. This book was heartbreakingly factual and captivating to read. I could almost feel the heat and flames as I read. It was agony to imagine flaming ceilings falling into classrooms with 50 or more children. So many mistakes...phone calls in broken English, wrong address, locked gated entry, ladders that were too short,.... This was not the worst school fire in our country but it was the one that was a catalyst for change.
