The opportunity was exceptional, and he made exceptional use of it. His position in the Fleet was regularised by a commission as Hon. Lieut. Coming into close and friendly contact with naval men of all ranks, the men in the lime light and the men in the shadow, the heroism of dazzling exploits and the nameless em durance of the keepers of the long watch, he came to know intimately the spirit that ruled the Fleet and made it - the Fleet.
