Elizabeth Robins Pennell's 1892 quest for 'authentic' Gipsies in eastern Europe makes for fascinating reading, as we get to see a now largely lost European civilization through the eyes of an American enthusiast--including in its late-nineteenth-century American incarnation. The first 67 pages of the book are actually set in and around Philadelphia, where Elizabeth Robbins first encountered and developed a passion for Gipsies and their music. Her travels - in Hungary mostly - with her illustrator husband Joseph Pennell were in fact a source of disappointment, as she found the better Gipsy musicians to be playing in hotels in city attire, and without the depth and magic she had felt at home.
