Seller's Description:
Illustrations by Marguerite Davis. Foreword by May Lamberton Becker. 8vo. Teal blue cloth with gilt lettering and decorations. xx, 194pp. Color frontispiece, numerous line drawings, pictorial endpapers. Very good. Quite faint binding edgewear, else tight and internally near fine. Superb, tight and handsome first edition of this thick collection of charming verse--boldly inscribed with an original verse and signed by her in black ink on front flyleaf: "Tirra lirra, / Tirra lee! / This book was written / All by Me! / Laura E Richards / April, 1935." The incredibly prolific and versatile writer (1850-1943), daughter of Julia Ward Howe and abolitionist Samuel Gridley Howe, won the 1917 Pulitzer Prize together with her sisters for a biography of their mother – “Tirra Lirra” even opens with a dedicatory poem "To my Mother." Among her delightful children's verse is the wackily nonsensical "Eletelephony, " which appears in this volume--and long after Richards' death this book was awarded the 1959 Lewis Carroll Shelf Award (meaning it belonged on the same shelf as Lewis Carroll's "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" and "Through the Looking-Glass"). Quite a choice copy.
