He missed the fine point of the enterprise, which is, that manliness will never seem anything, but will be something, however little. His years were against him, but he put on an air which flavoured of age. Ordinary language was not enough for him, so he larded his weak conversation with minced oaths, such as ' Demmit.' He fondled his poor little moustache with more parental solicitude, perhaps, because it was so weak. But, above all, he drank like a man; and to top the edifice of his manhood, he smoked. But he was not suited to be a chimney, and the end of his enterprise was, that he was sick. # The Fir-tree There was an evergreen fir-tree, which was growing in the clammy winter, in a skeleton grove.
