Seller's Description:
Second edition, corrected and enlarged (of the first title; published earlier the same year with 210 pages) and first edition (of the anonymously published second title, also concerning the corn laws). 8vo. 2 volumes: iv, 235, (1); (2), 49 pp. Charles Smith (1713-1777) was the son of a mill owner and made his fortune in trade; "these papers...show an intimate acquaintance with the subject, and are written with much clearness and ability. They earned the praise of Adam Smith, and are valuable from the light they throw on the English corn trade in the eighteenth century" (DNB). Kress 6382 and 6392 ("In favor of the commutation of tithes"). Some faint signs of damping in the margins of the final 70 pages (not affecting the text block), a very good copy. Later marbled boards. (#5250).
