Here's a recital that hangs together, always a challenge in a stylistically diverse environment. All three of these sonatas were commissioned by violinist Cho-Liang Lin, and all were written late in their composers' lives (Steven Stucky has sadly passed away since his sonata's composition.) They are diverse works, and they weren't commissioned as a set, yet they are unified by a certain retrospective mood: an attempt on the composers' parts to define themselves in relation to predecessors -- Debussy for Stucky, Piston and Bartók for John Harbison, and perhaps Ernest Bloch for Paul Schoenfeld. This, of course, speaks to the insight of Lin and pianist Jon Kimura Parker in constructing their program, and they match this insight with precise, incisive performances. The program is dedicated to Stucky's memory, and the "Calmo" opening movement of his sonata makes a fine valediction and benediction.
