Out of this terrible complication only a very wise, or a very presumptuous man can attempt to trace any path of speedy issue. Though, of late, events have marched rapidly, and though a crisis has almost suddenly come upon us, the immediate prospect is by no means bright. Liberal majorities, indeed, have, on the whole, declared themselves in favour of equality against privilege, of religion against sect, of right against the ascendancy of party or of creed.
