The great Artists of the Cinque Cento were strongly contra-distinguished in their orders of genius. There was, however, between Eaffaelle and Correggio a considerable affinity in all which relates to harmony of lines and sweetness of expression. But here the similitude stops. To Eaffaelle's universality Correggio had no claim. Depicting with intuitive felicity the gentler classes of emotion, he has no language for the sterner passions. The Executioner, who dispatches Santa Placida seems to want nerve for his terrible office--the soldier who derides Christ testifies pity rather than malignity--Even Pilate on the Judgment-seat manifests nothing of the authority of a Judge--A deficiency like this, it must be admitted, derogates from the character of a perfect painter, whose office it is to transmit with equal accuracy all the traits of mind, and all the phases of feeling--Yet to this peculiar structure of mind we owe, perhaps, the grace and tenderness which characterise the pictures of Correggio; his proper sphere was that of Angels and Saints and Madonnas; or if, occasionally, he strayed among the luxuriant myths of the Greek Mythology, his mind was too pure to be long tolerant of that voluptuous atmosphere.
