Might as well kick down the dough for this double set of 37 bands from the U.S., the Netherlands and Germany because that old tribute to Neil, The Bridge (the project that spawned the tribute monster), is starting to sound mighty 1989 by comparison. Among our American friends: What a treat to hear a female vocal on a Neil number, as Sonya Hunter turns in a sparkling "Expecting to Fly;" former Windbreaker, Bobby Sutliff, does a surprisingly interesting and edgy "Don't Let It Bring You Down," with Mitch Easter tweaking in the studio. Steven Roback's gentle "The Needle and the Damage Done" is plain lovely; Dale Duncan, of Map of Wyoming, makes a career vocal performance on "Don't Be Denied," and Steve Wynn does a shrewd "Time Fades Away" (who knew that it so closely resembled his "Days of Wine and Roses"?). Young's vocal doppelganger, Chris Cacavas' spooky keyboard jamming on "Tonight's the Night" makes his version unique, while Ghosthouse had the keen idea to punk-up "Don't Cry No Tears." Sole Englishman, Nick Saloman's one-man Bevis Frond, keeps it pretty straight on the under-appreciated "I've Been Waiting for You" -- but then he's a recognized Neil devotee. Does it matter who did "Cortez the Killer," as long as it got done? OK, they are called Hallo Venray, of Holland. So it's heavy on the jangle and paisley underground bands, but everyone contributes their most loving versions of Young's songs for charity -- and it's in chronological order! ~ Denise Sullivan, Rovi
