Going back, it's easy to hear that his sound was already formed -- the spare but rich guitar work and the vocals influenced by griots and muezzins. It's beautiful, haunting, and hypnotic, and his songs have a dignity that won't be denied. The problem, such as it is, is in the arrangements. Rather than letting N'Diaye speak for himself, Alain Renaud often clutters things with his extra guitar and basslines, which end up detracting from the whole, and that's a shame. There's power in what N'Diaye does, not dissimilar to Dylan in his own way (although musically very distant), and in the force of his words. Diluting the message doesn't serve much purpose -- and it was obviously a lesson that was learned from this album. However, while far from perfect, it remains an excellent debut: lustrous, sometimes gloriously stark, and a signpost to the future N'Diaye is developing. ~ Chris Nickson, Rovi
