Distinguishing the last gasps of the doo wop era from the first breaths of the soul generation is a fool's errand. Distinguishing the last gasps of the doo wop era from the first breaths of the soul generation is a fool's errand. It's virtually impossible to establish concrete chronological parameters to clearly delineate one from the other -- late-period doo wop and first-generation soul instead bleed into and feed off of one another. Like you know pornography when you see it, you simply know whether it's doo wop or soul the minute you hear it. That's the raison d'être behind There Is a Thin Red Line Between Doowop & Soul, which compiles two-dozen shining examples of the kind of gorgeous group harmonies and lilting melodies that defined black American pop at the dawn of the 1960s -- some of it's doo wop, some of it's soul, and all of it soars. Most of this material is impossibly rare, the product of small independent labels -- and accordingly, the majority of songs sound mastered directly from the original vinyl singles, and the overall fidelity leaves much to be desired. That being said, your chances of hearing this stuff without picking up There Is a Thin Red Line Between Doowop & Soul is virtually nil, so just pick it up. Highlights include the Sunlovers' "This Love of Ours," the Idols' "The Stars Will Remember," the Utmosts' "I Need You," and the Chancellors' "Sad Avenue." ~ Jason Ankeny, Rovi
