Then & Now merges two 1966 studio sessions for RCA, and was reissued by USA Music Group. Frankie Randall was at the top of his career, getting roles in movies, performing at supper clubs and bistros, and appearing as a regular guest on TV variety shows. His voice was in fine fettle, strong, swinging, and sentimental when the occasion called for it. But he was clearly at his best when in the swinging saddle. His high station in the world of popular vocalists is evidenced by the fact that consummate arranger and conductor Marty Paich was summoned to be in charge of these sessions. Moving, as only he could, between blaring brassy orchestrations and smooth, string-based arrangements, Paich put together a set of charts tailored to the strong and expressive Randall baritone. A hymn like "The Cardinal" is a big romantic ballad with strings, French horns, chimes, kettle drums, and all the accompanying instrumental paraphernalia. It's kind of like a hot fudge sundae, gooey but tasting good. This is contrasted to a spare starting, jazzy rendition of "Mimi," which builds up measure by measure to a full big band blasting up to the coda. Really very exiting and ear catching stuff. But, then again, that's Paich. "The More I See You" has the same bouncing swagger that made Frank Sinatra king of the popular song hill. The average length of each track is about three minutes. So no time can be wasted and they must put their best foot forward right from the start. Randall and Paich hit the bull's-eye on virtually every track. This one is a winner from the past.
