There are only a handful of books I have read twice and only one I can recall reading three times. The Wild Realm: Animals of East Africa is that book. I first read it in third grade many years ago. I read it a second time in seventh grade. I just read it a third time and enjoyed it just as much as I did during the previous two readings.
In this fascinating narrative, distinguished anthropologist and paleontologist Louis S. B. Leakey (1903-1972) describes the unique wildlife of Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. While most of the book describes animal behavior, there are numerous hair-raising stories revealing Leakey's encounters with elephants, rhinos, lions, hyenas, and baboons. The book is organized by category of animal as revealed by some of the chapter titles: Last of the Giants, Predators Great and Small, The Preyed Upon, Aardvarks to Zorillas, The Primates, and The Vanished (a chapter devoted to extinct animals that once roamed East Africa). The final chapter describes the conservation efforts that Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania are making to preserve their treasured wildlife.
With its many photographs and succinct text, this book is ideal for both children and adults. I have a feeling that I will read and enjoy this book again at some point in the future. In short, The Wild Realm: Animals of East Africa is a delightful and engrossing book.
